10 - 15 minute Power Outage

Written by

Power went out for between 10 - 15 minutes at our office today.  It was a city-wide (Mississauga, ON. Canada) outage.

This gave me a good 10-15 minutes to reflect on how fickle technology is and how so totally unprepared we (and the whole world) are when it fails.

Installation

Installation was a breeze. openSUSE install process remains one of the best amosgst the major distros (yes we know we said the same thing for the Ubuntu 11.10 review.

Our installation was done via a bootable DVD iso image downloaded from here.

Installation

Installation was a breeze.  It went by very quickly without any incident. The Ubuntu installation experience remains one of the most polished of all the Linux distros.

Our installation was done via a bootable USB stick (4GB) original Kingston stick.

Surprisingly, A LOT of people including several mainstream media got the contents of today's announcement by Apple incorrectly.

Almost everybody said that the announcement today was going to unveil the new iPhone 5. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. We here at caffe*nix technologies of course knew better... we predicted the announcement of the iPhone 7Gx.

Instead the new iPhone 4S was unveiled today. Apple probably changed the name at last minute just to make us here at caffenix look bad.  And as usual the iPhone 4S was touted as the "The most amazing iPhone yet". We wonder if they (Apple) think people are so dumb and forgetful to remember that they said the EXACT same thing last year and the year before and the year before that!

Move along...nothing to see here!

We've been running development streams Fedora 15 as the ISO's have been made available. This is a quasi production environment. We use Fedora mostly for server type projects.

Nine traits of the veteran Unix admin was on slashdot a while back. Naturally, there should be a corresponding "11 traits of the veteran Linux admin".

Veteran Linux admin trait No. 1: We use sudo

Linux admins don't mind using sudo..and its not because they like it, but only because certain *nix distros insist on standardizing around sudo.
